My Dad was in the US Marine Detachment and was a Plank Owner. Went on the Shakedown Cruise in 1937. Pvbt. Walter A. Reynolds USMC. (36-57). Larry Reynolds
Larry, I had the opportunity to meet and get to know several of the CA-44 crew since as early as 1984. We have many artifacts from or connected to the ship but one of them in particular is a piece that is tied to the shakedown cruise.
My Dad passed away over 10 years ago. He was a 20 year Marine and retired a Msgt. E7 in 1957.He was most proud of that ship and the fact he stood guard duty on the USS Constitution. That and he had four great kids and never got a divorce3 USMC brothers in WW2.Artifacts? At the bottom of Iron Bay Sound? He was a great Dad. Larry USMCR (60-68) Semper Fi !!!
Larry, yes, the ship is at rest in the silt of “Iron Bottom Sound” near Savo Island. As to artifacts, we have many pieces related to the ship (not parts OF the ship).
It appears that Marine Corps blood runs thick in your family. In my family, Army, Navy and USAAF/USAF veterans dot my family tree back from the Revolution to present day.
And my BIL was a W4 in the Marine Reserve. He was also a San Diego Police Officer.
I’m 81 years old and too late for me to collect memories. Would be different if Dad was still alive.
A Veteran of WW2 and Korea he never talked about the war. Just his time on CA44. His best time in the service. Larry
Can you spot your father in the 1938 crew photo?
No. He was a 21year old kid. I have lots of pics of my Dad in his career of a US Marine.
He was a team shooter and in 1952 outshot every Marine in the Corps with a pistol. I have all
his gold medals.
That pic is too small to recognize anyone in the back. Thanks, Larry
My grandfather was on the shakedown cruise. I have a commemorative cartograph indicating he saw service on the cruise. It’s in decent shape for being 87 years old. I’d love to share a copy.
Joe,
Unfortunately, your comment was stuck in technology limbo until I saw it today. I would love to see the cartograph from the Shakedown cruise.
